The Papillon Project
I helped the Papillon Foundation design the “Turbotax for Expungement:” an application that helps underserved communities return to the labor market by making the process of record-sealing accessible and equitable.
An estimated 70 million to 100 million Americans having some type of criminal record as a result of mass incarceration and over-criminalization.
In the digital era, any criminal record—no matter how old or minor—can stand in the way of reentry, access to public resources, and full participation in society.
The expungement process is often costly and time consuming, especially for those who needs immediate employment or have a lower literacy level.
“A criminal record shouldn’t be a life sentence to poverty.”
Defining Solutions
We set our vision to be a “TurboTax-like” web app for expungement. Instead of navigating complicated legal processes and documents, users need a simple, intuitive, easy-to-follow guide that helps them prepare and file the petition.
An app that help users break down the expungement processes in easy-to-follow modules
Instruction that is comprehensible to most, aiming at 5th grade readability
Leverage OCR to eliminate repetitive tasks and streamline input
A secure document management feature to store users’ digital forms
An async demo for the document upload flow.
